What is VPN

VPN (virtual private network) :

VPN means a virtual private network is a technology which helps you to create secure and encrypted connections over the internet and networks. To provide security in VPN connection, data travels through the secure tunnel. To access and decrypt that data you must need decryption key. Vpn also helps you to create a connection on the internet anonymously so you can hide your identity. VPN uses different types of protocols to encrypt your data like Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS), IP security (IPsec), Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP), Point-To-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP).

How does VPN work?

In simple connection when you connect to the internet you first connect to your internet service provider (ISP). Then your internet service provider helps you to connect with any website or any other internet products which you want. In this connection, your all data passes through your internet service provider’s server and they can easily view your all data. In this connection, someone can steal your data by hacking you.

But when you use any VPN service then your data gets encrypted between you and your VPN service provider using different protocols and encryption methods. It works as a secure tunnel between you and your VPN service provider. Even if you get hacked by someone and steal your data then even they can’t decrypt it without the decryption key. Even your ISP can’t see your data. When VPN servers get your data then they decrypt it and completes your request according to your request data using a different IP address.

What are the benefits and use of VPN

1. Provides protection and security while using public WiFi and hotspots

When you use any public WiFi or hotspot there can be some chances that you are being tracked by someone and Someone also can hack you by some methods like packet-sniffing. But when you use VPN then you don’t have to worry because your data is encrypted. Even your internet service provider can’t see your data.

2. To hide your identity and location

It can help you to hide your IP address and location because whenever you access any website using VPN then VPN will use it’s own IP address and location of the VPN server. That means even that website can not see your original IP address. And if someone monitoring you using that IP address then even you don’t have worry because it is not your own IP address.

3. To use websites and internet products which are not available in your region

Some websites and internet services are limited to some specific regions and countries and not available in other countries. For examples, Facebook is not available in China and Spotify music service is only available in only some countries. But if you want to use those services and websites then you can use it through VPN. Different VPN service providers have VPN servers located in different countries so you can use VPN server of that specific country to use access those websites and services.

Disadvantages of VPN

1. Your internet will slow-down

For encryption and decryption process, it requires some processing power and time. The more high encryption means more processing power and time requirement. That means it will take some more time than a normal connection.

When you use some free or shared VPN server then probably they can’t provide enough speed and it affects your internet speed. And even when your VPN server is located at a long distance from you then your data has to travel through more distance. And more distance means more time.

2. Your VPN provider will know everything

When you use any VPN service then your VPN provider knows everything about what you are accessing on the internet. And if you are using free or non-trusted VPN service then maybe they can use your data illegally.

Is it legal? and can you completely hide your self?

First of all, Yes, it is completely legal in some countries because of a legal right to privacy. But in some countries like China and etc. VPN services are not allowed.

Now, probably you have the question that can I do hacking or illegal kinds of stuff using VPN? Then the answer is NO you can’t. Because there are some privacies and policies of VPN providers. Even when you use VPN you are being recorded by your VPN provider and when you do any illegal activities then your VPN provider has to provide all the details of you to your government.

Should you use free VPN services

There are so many free VPN services are available but all comes with some limitation. Some free services will provide you with shared and low-speed servers. Some non-trusted services not just sell your data but also try to misuse your data. And running a VPN service is not cheap, and they can’t afford to provide everything for free so they will show you some advertisement. Some free VPNs are free for a limited time then you have to pay for it. So, I recommend you to use paid VPN services instead of free if you want more security and speed.

How to buy better VPN service

There are so many paid and trusted VPN service providers are available. You can choose according to your preference. There are some factors like Price, Speed, Privacy, Security, Number of servers/countries, Number of simultaneous connections, Customer support, Cross-platform support, Free trials and money back guarantees that you have to consider and check before paying for VPN service.

If you know some coding and Linux then you can buy some virtual private server and configure according to your use. Tutorials are also available for it on the internet.
